Emma Raducanu became the first British woman in 44 years to win a grand slam title, defeating Leylah Annie Fernandez 6-4, 6-3 at Flushing Meadows.
The brilliant 18-year-old had three Championship points and it was third time lucky. As she aced Fernandez to take make history and achieve one of the biggest triumphs in British sport.

Raducanu’s mother, Dong Mei Zhai, is now known as Renee, and her father Ian was cheering her on as she won the
US Open even though they were not in attendance due to Covid travel restrictions.
When asked about her parents coming to watch her play, Raducanu said: “It’s not possible, because you need a waiver and it takes a couple of weeks for approval.
“It’s too late and they won’t be able to get one.”
When she arrived in New York for her qualifiers, few predicted the Orpington teenager would go beyond the early rounds – let alone make it to the last two.
